"Their sole little hick up being the left over of previously common modulo 20 "

Who in their right mind would have modulo 20? Means you have to take your shoes off when the numbers get over a handful.

"But not at such a massive basis like the French words directly adopted by English."

The English were essentially slaves for generations. No huge surprise they adopted words from the French. Some of the words are very telling, like mortgage and a lot of legal terms. Which is why legal documents are filled with so many redundancies, they would state it in the proper French and then in the Common. Others are like we have one word for the animal, like cow, deer and sheep, but another word for the meat, like beef, venison and mutton. With the name for the meat being derived from the French. Shows you who took care of the animal as opposed to getting to eat it.
