Altie...
I was in Missouri, I was supposed to change planes in St Louis. As soon as we set down, they said that the airport was closed. The airport there was worthless as far as helping people, it was really sad.
I lucked into finding a room for the first night, then had to stand in a three hour taxi line to get to it....outside, at about 15 degrees. People were not prepared for that.
The next day, American Airline said all was open and moving smoothly. But, when I got back to the airport, there wasn't much activity...then the truth came out, they didn't have deicing solution and were scrambling to get it. I guess they hadn't realized it was winter, yet.
I finally got out about 10 pm, only because my plane came in from Charlotte and didn't need to be deiced. I'm very thankful I got out, because, like you said, a half million people in St Louis were without power...a lot of people spent days in that airport.
Then when I got into Tulsa, the streets there were really bad..no taxi's or transportation anywhere. I finally called a taxi and found one that would venture out, this hilarious Jamaican dude.. It took a couple of hours to get 6-7 miles to my Mom's place....ahhhhh.... was inside about a minute, then the taxi calls me back up to see if I could come help him, he's stuck. I spent the next hour or so digging and pushing the guy out..I'm still sore.
I slept very, very well that night.
