In Alaska, I started using a backyard mechanic and he worked out OK until he had to put in a new transmission in my wife's Grand Am. He not only destroyed the new part that we paid $600 for, he refused to repair the car after that. We had it towed to a mechanic that we learned about, who fixed the thing for a reasonable price.

We took the backyard guy to small claims court and had the new mechanic there to testify. The backyard guy never showed up and we got a judgment that he refused to pay. We took it to a collection agency and two years later we got half the money back from them. Evidently he walked in and paid them the $600 to clear his docket.

I took one other guy to small claims court. He had serviced my car, but less than a thousand miles later the oil filter fell off and my engine was ruined. I lost the case and had to pay his court costs, which really frosted my tail.
