Still no agreement on Iran sanctions
Agencies

Paris: A group of six world powers have again failed to reach an agreement on a draft UN resolution which would impose sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme.

Talks will now move back to the UN in New York in a last bid to strike a deal in a process which has dragged on for several months.

In the talks, France, Germany and Britain told Russia they want a UN resolution on sanctions to be passed by the end of the year.

But the Russians have said they are still not happy with several details in the proposal, including freezing assets and banning travel for individuals and groups involved in Tehran’s programme.

A statement from France’s foreign ministry said: "We made substantive progress on the scope of the sanctions, targeting proliferation-sensitive activities. There remain several outstanding issues, on which we will reflect over the coming days.”

The only progress that was made came when the Russians agreed to a proposal to slap export bans on more technology and materials that could be used in missile programmes.

The sanctions are being discussed after Iran failed to meet a UN deadline of August 31 to suspend uranium
