Justin, Pay as you grow from 1 processor to 128 with no surprises, no obsolescence, and a single system memory image all the way. NT is years and years and years away from offering this. A single or maybe dual proc. NT desktop system makes a good interface to our bigger boxes, but it's certainly not a replacement for Unix.
You know one thing I don't hear a lot about from the people who predict the death of Unix is 'sure NT is improving and will continue to do so, but then Unix is also improving and will continue to do so. Also from a not too techical point of view, can someone please tell me how NT will ever be as scaleable as Unix?
Your comment here is well said! We have some customers that don't need Unix or MIPS capability on the desktop to interface with our larger machines. We'd like to get their computer system dollars. By offering them a 'one stop shopping experience', I think we can. Bear in mind, though, that the real work is, and will be for quite some time, being done on Unix/MIPS.
Hmmm, very interesting that SGI is supporting the non-Unix/Mips world but MSFT does nothing at all for Unix or any other platforms except Macintosh. One other area I think the 'NT will replace Unix crowd' is overlooking is the incredible popularity of Linux. Linux is getting phenomenal support and if I'm not mistaken the source code is there for anyone, correct?
