Also, Northbridge like chips tend to be pad limited, i.e. the size of the pads to which the wires are bound need to have a certain size in order to achieve good contact. If a lot of pads are needed (one for each connected pin, so about 1000 on current AMD CPU's), the size of the pads dominates the total size of the die, and shrinking the transistors doesn't shrink the size needed for the pads.
