The profits made selling recreational drugs ...

If you tax away the profits from the legal suppliers, there wouldn't be any supply of recreational drugs except that supplied by illegal non-taxpaying suppliers - the guys supplying those drugs now.

could be used to finance rehabilitation of users.

Why rehabilitate them? Many advocates of legalization don't seem to think there's any problems with using drugs so why rehabilitate?

And would there be much demand for rehabilitation? Most people in rehab programs are motivated by the desire to avoid being locked up. If there's nothing held over their head, users would never seek rehab.

The users would at least be assured they were using quality recreational drugs.

True.

The point being people are going to use drugs no matter what the law dictates and this would eliminate the criminal element to a large degree which can't be controlled.

I know people are going to use them. I just wonder how legalization would affect demand - it would have to raise it, drmatically I fear.

It would also reduce underage drug use.

I don't think so.
