Your article is quite informative, but begs the question, If in 1984 they were that unhappy, why are they still there? I can see staying if you had some chance at happiness or of advancement, but if there were not of those why not just leave. Secondly, you keep talking about Lily White Europe. Besides the fact that it seems overtly racist, it also seems to demean a large portion of the worlds population. Granted that there is a problem in many countries that as welfare gets better more and more people would rather collect it than do work they feel is underpaid, but that does give others a chance to immigrate and better their lives. But these French workers have their own future in their hands, they can go home. If they do not home must be worse.
