IMO, Bush believes he is on a messianic mission. Though he has not publicly said so, he reportedly told some of his neo-Con buddies and Fundamentalist Christians that God has made him president and that he knows what God wants! And Fundamentalits Christians like Pat Robertson had said much the same thing. To be sure, Bush's decisions are mostly faith-based. This, as all sane and rational folks know, is a dangerous thing.

Bush, no doubt, believes that the setbacks he and America have suffered are nothing more than mere "tests" of his faith from the God he believes in. From this, you can see why Bush insists on "staying the course". To be sure, the Fundamentalst Christians have told him the same thing. And so together they keep blundering on with their delusion.

BTW, Bush does not wish to be the first president to lose a war. On the contrary, he wants to be regarded in history with the likes of F.D Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. Needless to say, he will be sorely disappointed.

Another point of view:

Bush and his NeoCons are obsessed with Israel. Don't forget that some Democrats like Pelosi have strong ties to Israel. For all their talk about ensuring the security of America and giving the Iraqis a better life, they are actually obsessed with securing the safety of Israel. For this, they will have to ensure that Hezbollah, Iraq and Iran are overcome permanently. And so, the war will have to continue even if it means diverting vast monetary resources to Israel and the war even at the expense of improving the unemployment situation at home, shoring up social security, fighting crime, and maintaining infrastructure and other improvements in general. So, American congressmen and Senators will ever dance like poodles to the beck and call of the "kingmaker" AIPAC (Israel Lobby) and ever support Israel !!!

Surely, this mad obsession will come to an end if Bush is impeached. But that will not happen because, as Pelosi (the Senator with ties to Israel) has said, impeachment would be a waste of tme. But I suspect impeachment proceedings will not occur as it will most certainly open up many cans of worms, not the least of which is 9/11, the unravelling of which has the potential to do irreparable damage to the image of both Israel and America !!!
