I'm in great agreement with your post. But I would like to add that my observation is that many people who fall into the category of Watson rather than Sherlock (i.e. not particularly nimble in the abstract & deductive fields) in fact make solid citizens and can be very successful in a broad range of endeavors.

For myself, I'm always worried about efficiency and optimal solutions, yet sometimes this results in gridlock and indecision, when in fact a suboptimal solution pursued with determination might accomplish more.

When you are playing with bombs & blood there is indeed lots of moral imperative to not screwup IMO. To borrow a term from mathematics, I'd say that both insight & determination are necessary but not sufficient conditions. Having one and lacking the other is not good. Unfortunately, post 9/11 there has been sufficient determination but too little insight. Perhaps insight, determination, and luck make it necessary and sufficient conditions.
