"BS and balderdash. Babbage's machines at the time were a solution still looking for a problem"

Nonsense. His machines were designed to create numeric tables which had become the lifeblood of British civilization. There definitely was a problem at hand.

He wouldn't have been able to build his difference engines without the full weight of an industrial society behind him. Such things don't strike like lightning bolts from the blue, there is a whole web of interconnected things that lead to them. Babbage probably wouldn't have gotten as far as he did with his analytical engine if Jacquard hadn't of invented his loom. Now none of his machines were completed in his lifetime for a number of reasons. Not the least of which, the mechanical tolerances needed weren't possible at the time.
