Obama is perhaps the most charismatic political leader in modern US history, certainly since Clinton. He can charm a crowd as well as Bill or Reagan or any of them ever have. The only question I have is that he needs more experience and could afford to wait. Also the sleazy GOP racist ad which knocked off Harold Ford shows that there are still too many racist voters, though Tennessee is not a typical state, it's one of the top five or six most racist. The GOP don't have any charismatic charmer candidates. None. They don't have anyone with a positive message either.
