Will activists in New Hampshire, Iowa and Nevada side with Obama? That's what counts for starters. Next, could he survive the rightwing smear attacks and convince people he can command the military?

One good thing about Gore and Kerry, they've already been through it and are largely smear-proof. Some of the others are as well. Hillary has some extra baggage, though it might be mainly in peoples' imagination, the product of a long rightwing smear campaign which spread all kinds of lies about the Clintons.

So is Obama smear-proof? Could he do what Harold Ford could not? On the surface he seems like an ideal rightwing target. But would he have enough cred to smash right through the smears and win over the hearts of middle America? That's the real question. No one knows the answer yet, but I'll bet Obama is thinking about it right now. He knows beter than anyone what his own drawbacks are.

Btw: I keep typing Osama instead of Obama. Not a good sign.
