(EDIT: last permitted post, niceguy, see OT thread) Hans,

I could believe 2.7-2.9 GHz for DUAL core desktop parts, sure. (To compete with DC 45nm Intel parts at >3.5GHz)

They do not "confirm" Q2 07, by the way. They merely quote (actually misquote, because they say "launch") from AMD's "task-master demo" press release in that article you linked.

The trouble with that press release is that it says two different things regarding the QC server parts:

- "introduction" in the second quarter

- but then, in availability, they do not say 2nd quarter... but rather "mid 2007", which is typically understood to represent the Q2-Q3 period.

So the question is... why use different language and different dates in the *same* press release? I think the answer is probably that "introduction" is something short of what one might thing of as a "launch" with actual availability.

That PR serves as a CYA for AMD. No one can complain if QC Barcelona ships in September, for AMD can hold another demo in June, call it an "introduction", and still meet the "Availability" section by shipping in September.

For your reference, AMD's PR:

amd.com

Availability
AMD expects to begin shipping native Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors that incorporate four processor cores on a single die of silicon to customers in mid-2007. The first AMD quad-core processor line-up introduced will be for the two- to eight-socket server and workstation market.

earlier...

With the introduction of native quad-core x86 processors in the second quarter of 2007, AMD plans to again deliver exceptional technology based on the same customer-centric design principles that steered the development of our award-winning AMD dual-core server, workstation, desktop and mobile processors.
