Obama's name and race are obvious drawbacks to running for president. His wife is a positive. If he were married to a white woman, forget about it.

Keep in mind, that only Illinois and Massachusetts have ever even elected a black to major statewide office. We are not at the end of the racial equality curve yet, we are a lot better off that 30-40 years ago, but still something like 60% of the country would oppose a minority president, or a woman, even if they'd never admit it publicly, or to a pollster.

That said, I think the country is ready for a black or woman VP.
But only the right one. Colin Powell might have gotten that if Bush had picked him.

One step at a time here. I'm just mirroring the nation, not expressing any personal prejudice.
