07:53 AKAM Akamai Tech: Content delivery business booming - TheDeal.com (54.40 )

TheDeal.com reports a small band of emerging technology players lead the increasingly lucrative business of moving packets of data around the Internet. Cos such as Akamai Technologies and Limelight Networks are seeing their sales and value soar as more and more audio, video and other multimedia content whips across the Web along their proprietary delivery online networks. As deal activity ramps up, weaker content delivery networks are heading for the exit. For example, Savvis (SVVS) is trying to get out of providing Web acceleration services by moving to sell its roughly $100 mln content delivery business. Limelight is viewed as the most likely buyer of Savvis' CDN business. Other potential buyers include: Akamai, which could see such a deal as a chance to take a competitor out of the market; Microsoft (MSFT), which accounts for about 80% of Savvis' CDN rev; and Google (GOOG). Although rumors recently surfaced that Google might be planning to buy Akamai, the search giant's competitors are customers of the CDN, and it's unlikely Google would be content to serve as a neutral host for rival traffic. "I'm not a big believer in Google buying Akamai because I don't think they'd be interested in supporting Akamai's customers," said Colby Synesael, an analyst with investment bank Merriman. "I could see IBM [Corp.] getting interested, or maybe a telecom services provider." Synesael thinks that interest in buying Akamai might materialize down the road, rather than in the next year or two.
