Barbara - Perhaps I mis-spoke about AMES and Walmart not competing in the same markets. AMES old retailing policy (20 years ago) was to enter the secondary markets and carve their niche there. I guess with the great proliferation of WAL and others, there certainly is some overlapping of markets.
You actually travel ~ 22 miles further to shop at Walmart rather than AMES ? Is the price savings at Walmart that much better, or is it the selection of merchandise that attracts you to WAL ? I must admit I have not done any comparison shopping between the two, but I am surprised the prices would be that much different. Walmart can certainly buy at better prices because of their clout, but I guess I'd better get out there and do some pricing comparisons.
The revenue growth rate for AMES has been very low, but as long as the company can successfully upscale their merchandise to higher profit margin items they can continue to grow profits. Now how long they can continue to increase those margins is anybody's guess. Perhaps Arthur, who knows AMES as well as anyone, would care to make a comment re: increasing margins vs. lackluster revenue growth.

P.S. Sorry, I guess Arthur and I were posting responses at the same time.
