There was one other time when this was true. The Roaring '20s. It didn't work out so well...

Actually, that isn't true. That is one of the factors that drove the Boom/Depression cycle that was so common during th 1800s. Our fiscal policy tried to actively manage that after the 1930s with some degree of success. But that has been deemed class warfare, so...
