You think the Kurds might declare independence, and then immediately invade Syria, Turkey and/or Iran, against any of which they would probably lose a war? Why? That would be a recipe for failure of their declaration of independence.

This is something that would require a lot of negotiation and planning. Negotiation and planning that is noticeable by its absence at this point in time.

I'd be surprised if the Kurds haven't been planning something along secession lines for years. If the rest of Iraq descends further into civil war, the more the likelihood that they head toward independence.
