I don't think that most coal is burned in barrels. Power plants belching thick, black smoke are a thing of the past, even in 3rd world countries. A power plant that is emitting 10% soot is going to turn the surrounding area black.

But, if you assume a higher percentage of CO, which is a more potent greenhouse gas, well, that isn't conservative.

Easy to google. Coal production has been tracked for a very long time, albeit it is hard to find figures for global production before 1900. You have to add up the production from the various countries.
