"You think the Kurds might declare independence, and then immediately invade Syria, Turkey and/or Iran, against any of which they would probably lose a war?"

No. And it isn't an invasion that is at the heart of the problem, it is cross-border terrorism. Syria, Turkey and Iran have expressed their fear of that, and Turkey and Iran seem willing to act on that fear. Whether it is rational or not isn't relevant.

"I'd be surprised if the Kurds haven't been planning something along secession lines for years."

For centuries. But the planning doesn't involve Syria, Turkey and Iran. All three have to buy in or it won't happen. Ok, it might happen, but it won't last long.
