Anodized steel coins would be the solution to wear and cheapness.

Alternatively they could just go back to gold and silver and increase the value of the coin.

Low denomination money has always cost near to or more than its face value to produce. The farthing went the way of all flesh more than a 100 years ago for just that reason.

A certain CDN nickeliferous magnetite deposit makes stainless steel by direct reduction. It is not that high in magnetite but just high enough to make a corrosion/wear resistant nickel stainless from a mag concentrate. I am not sure about chrome content, but there is a chromium deposit nearby so some of that may be in there too.

Interestingly, the nickel for the CDN loonies was reputed to have come from a mine outside Timmins that had a very low copper content. Timmins nickel. Their con was shipped to Sherrit Gordon in Manitoba.
