As the implosion of that system spreads, the housing meltdown will jump the tracks into the overall economy. Ironically, the surest sign of this occurrence is how completely blind economists are to the possibility. "Recessions Becoming More Rare," says a USA Today survey of economists. So rare that USA Today is stretching the outlook from the usual year to five years. Half of the economists surveyed foresee no chance of recession over that span. "Very rarely are we in recession nowadays," says a senior economist at Wells Fargo.
