Sal, you seem to have gotten to my previous post before I finished editing, you might look again.
Unpaid market share can work two ways: Something nobody would do if it wasn't free, or something that will fill all the volume when free and kill off competitors, grab 'mindshare', etc. Of course I am familiar with the free razor - sell razorblades paradigm.
But it is three years later now, almost, eh? By this time people have to be charging. For something. Very few people are putting any windows/activeX/OLE - specific stuff on their websites, or at least they usually provide alternatives, because I cruise the web an hour a day and never run into a glitch using Navigator (Except I gave up on Reg's site when I ran into a message that said in effect it would be a lot better experience with IE.)
Some things you don't want, like involuntary cookies, or having your email address snagged by websites, seem inevitable, but IE compatibility is not one of the things I am currently putting up with. I think even most IE users basically are just using it to emulate Netscape browsers.
Thanks for your reply.
