New York, NY--Samsung used it's second annual Mobile Summit in New York City today to lay it's stake in the ground on the future of wireless, and it is mobile WiMAX, based on the IEEE 802.16e standard.

"4G is WiMAX. We're very clear about that," said Philip Garrison, mobile strategist for Samsung Telecommunications America (STA). The company used the summit to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of STA, a milestone marked by $4 billion in revenue for the Samsung subsidiary, as well as 100 million units having been sold in the U.S. "And we will launch 60 new models this year," said Garrison.

While the company sees mobile WiMAX as the future, in the near term mobility and connectivity will come through a variety of wireless interfaces, including EVDO Rev A, HSDPA and HSUPA, MobileTV, satellite broadcasts and dual-mode Wi-Fi/cellular phones. "MediaFLO will be big next year," said Garrison.

What adds to the authenticity of Samsung's prediction is that it has few axes to grind....
