I think there's also an ID. Machine IDs that humans never need to type can be 32 or 64 bit random numbers, or proper cert, in either case its infeasible to guess the ID.


...but in that regard the crucial question is once the fax gets into the record, how does the software know WHERE in the heck to put it?


Well, if the fax from the Dr. contains *his* ID, then it can be authoritatively stored as a report from your Dr. and filed as such. Of course, much, much better is for the Dr's systems to send properly formatted XML, encrypted and signed, over the net.
