The person who comes up with an objective way to rate Physicians will make a fortune.

There is a service that rates physicians and for a small fee you can get access to their list. My daughter paid for a year's subscription when we were looking for a doctor. There was only one doctor in the entire database that lived in our city, and he was one we had seen once. We had no basis to judge him on, so I can't attest to the value of the service. You can check it out if you want, at castleconnolly.com

Sometimes local magazines will publish a list of the best local doctors. Yesterday I read one such article, and again found one of the doctors we had visited a few times. He had put us on to a water therapy program that is very helpful, but again because we have visited him only a few times we have no sufficient basis to evaluate his personal qualifications.

Alas, I think it is pretty much a hit and miss proposition, as you suggest. We've seen many doctors in the last three years, and only one has been willing and able to "think outside the box," as it were. Some doctors are all too willing to pass you off if they can't put their thumb on what ails you.

My daughter's boyfriend is an MD, a pathologist in the military. He chose that field because he doesn't like patients all that much. I wish more doctors were that honest.
