If you live in a small community, you don't have much choice. It's moving into a new city that creates the problem.

I use Kaiser for my medical, and have been happy with them. This account of what happened to a dance partner of mine shows the good and the bad of medical care.

She had her gall bladder removed six months ago. Her Doctor went out of his way to make sure she got what he considered the "Best" surgeon they had. What she didn't know until later is that the surgeon had his new assistant actually do the operation. He didn't do a good cleanout, and some material migrated, I believe, to her pancreas. They went back in and tried to get it all and did not succeed. She still has problems from it. What happened next sounds like a "good" thing to me.

The Department Head called her up last week and told her he had set up an appointment with Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in LA for an evaluation of her problem next month. He told her that if they recommended further surgery, he wanted her to have it done there, not at her hospital here.

That, to me, is an admission that someone else can now solve the problem better than his department can. I have heard of them doing this in the past.

All Hospitals make mistakes. It's how they handle them that is important. Usually it's a coverup.
