yes, it's all that's left in the Fed's arsenal. I think they know what will happen if the stock market falls apart, unemployment skyrockets and a dollar crisis breaks out. That could mean complete mayhem. Complete mayhem is unavoidable. The only remaining decision is mayhem now or worse mayhem later. Since the entire Fed was appointed by the Bush administration, I think it's obvious what the answer is.

The 5 coupon passes into the heat of merger mania and heightened stock market speculation confirms it.

Just because we know the Fed prefers pain later doesn't mean they will get what they want. So far they have but it's a high risk, high wire act. It's impossible for them to control the actions of millions of people.
