According to an official from the Philippines Consulate in Dubai, Manila is studying a proposal to increase housemaids' salaries from $200 to $400. How much is housing, mass transit, food etc in Dubai vs the US? Is the cost of living cheaper in Dubai than the US? I suspect so. Dubai is expensive, with minimal mass transit. However, the maids above would live with and be fed by their host family. Loads of workers get by on ~$400 per month, however. 12 people (not a family, individuals) to a 3 bedroom apartment is common.
