Because of GM squeezing out good dealers. The dealers often own other car dealerships. One pontiac dealer owns two chrysler dealerships.

This obviously indicates that dealers know how to sell cars.. If not GM then Chrysler or Toyota or Honda. which made up for the other 40% of the total car market.

But 16 million cars and trucks sold each year, only 6 million are cars. Trucks are for farms and industrial uses. Dealer that buy cars by the fleet gets more discount then straight dealer markups. And sometimes they can use the credit(payment terms) from the manufacturer to sell cars before they have to pay for the cars.

So, the success of selling cars is the looks of the cars, and the availability of many models. The more dealers, the more cars and trucks you sell until the district is saturated.
