Texas Instruments is expanding its portfolio of WiMAX solutions with 2 new announcemeents in the WiMax sector.

Firstly, TI is introducing three release-to-production radio frequency (RF) transceiver reference designs. The designs support IEEE’s 802.16d/e standard RF front-end requirements for a variety of wireless infrastructure technologies, including base stations, access points, wireless backhaul, point-to-point microwave, safety band and Frequency Division Duplex (FDD)-based applications. The complete reference designs include board, design database, schematics and bill of materials to significantly reduce development time.

The TSW5002 RF reference design, which operates at 2.5 GHz, incorporates TI’s TRF11xx chipset, while the TSW5003, operating at 3.5 GHz, utilises the TRF12xx chipset. Both comprise five chips with fully integrated super-heterodyne receivers and transmitters. The complete reference designs support FDD, Half Frequency Division Duplex (HFDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD) modes with a real interface at a low intermediate frequency (IF) to the data conversion subsystem. TI’s flexible RF chipsets are compliant with today’s demanding mask requirements, while the receivers feature excellent sensitivity and blocker suppression. The TSW5005 reference design, operating at 5.6 GHz, incorporates the TRF2432 and TRF2436 heterodyne transceiver two-chip chipset, the most integrated solution available. These chipsets support 4.9-5.9GHz air interface frequency band, and consist of an IF and RF transceiver. The reference design supports TDD mode with complex I/Q interface.

In addition to providing a complete design for the designated frequency, each reference board can be customised for the various transceiving frequencies supported by each chipset. The TSW5002/3/5 can be customised for frequency ranges of 2.3-2.7GHz, 3.3-3.8GHz and 4.9-5.8GHz respectively. Designers can customise the design quickly and easily by substituting on-board filters centred at its band of interest.

All three reference designs are now available online at an evaluation module (EVM) price of US$499 for each of the three boards.

In a second announcement Texas Instruments is enhancing its WiMAX infrastructure solutions with the announcement of its WiMAX Forum 802.16e Wave 1 Certification Library. TI’s highly optimised software library incorporates all of the core signal processing and permutation functions required to build a Wave 1 compliant solution. In addition, TI has incorporated Wave 2 permutation functions to hasten the adoption of the advanced multi-antenna signal processing features such as MIMO and beam-forming, which are defined as part of the WiMAX Forum Wave 2 feature set.

TI’s software library is key to its 1 GHz, DSP-based wireless infrastructure solution, which in turn supports the evolution of the mobile WiMAX standard. The library follows an extensive development and testing process, making it easy to integrate into both OEM products and service provider networks. Rigorous testing and responsive customer support are claimed to reduce internal development costs for equipment manufacturers.

With mobile WiMAX rapidly emerging on the broadband wireless front, the need for swift, seamless interoperability testing is recognised as becoming increasingly necessary. The five wave requirements established by the WiMAX Forum define a rigorous certification process, with interoperability testing labs demonstrating compliance among service and solutions providers and ultimately providing feature-rich, high-speed broadband wireless access via WiMAX. TI’s WiMAX software development is designed to adhere closely to the Forum’s certification requirements. TI’s software library is available now.
