Is it a cell phone or an MP3 player?

Neither and both.

The user interface certainly needs a lot of work, but much of that is due to the form factor and economics.

That's exactly the point. 90% of the user interface is removed from the tiny device. The vast majority of the interface will be on the computer where it makes more sense.

The success of the device will be mostly software oriented. In fact the hardware may not be as good as other devices. However Apple will get better and better at that. But the software will be better than anyone else's

Jack Campbell has hit the nail on the head with his concept of Apple's new cell phone.

technicallytrue.blogspot.com

Yeah I think he got close.

What Apple is doing here what they did with the iPod, but much more extensive.

The device itself will be nothing new, but Apples understanding of it, it's conceptualization of the devices abilities, liabilities and what the consumer needs, will be subtly different.

This is all about software and conceptualizing.

The iPod was just the beginning of Apple's understanding. The iPhone is a device the will be the extension of Apple's understanding of what a mobil device means when mated to a computer.

In my opinion this goes beyond just a cell phone with mp3 although I'm guessing that when we see it the changes will be subtle and many people may not immediately understand Apple's point of view. (I didn't when I first beheld the iPod and I think I'm not alone.)

iPod fanatics will be the first to understand and will be the early adopters.

If the rumors are true Job's ordered the design team to completely redo their first attempt from scratch. That means he's really into getting the concept right and he's betting big on this one.

I'm also guessing that the market will be underwhelmed and the stock will take a dive creating a buying opportunity. I'm thinking it won't be an immediate success but if it works it will pick up steam when people begin to understand Apple new conceptual viewpoint. Apple's ideas are sure to be well thought out and will surely make sense.

The question is will consumers accept Apple's new way of thinking about this device and Apple's price point which, as usual, will be a premium.

In any case the amazing story will be something to watch.
