McCain's stance is supported by only 12% of the country and none of the Joint Chiefs or Generals on the ground in Iraq. They already tried sending more troops last summer and violence escalated. I'm not even sure we have the troops to send.

It is a reckless, risky move and it's almost certain to fail. The only way it can succeed is through a political solution. That would involve two things that seem almost impossible now, Al Sadr to disband his militias and the SHias to volunteer to give the Sunnis a big share of the oil revenues.

Not for McCain's sake, but I sure hope something works, but the extra troops won't be what makes it happen if it does, and chances of any solution now are very slim, espcially since Bushies won't even talk to the two biggest neighboring countries.

95% chance McCain will be badly damaged by this, but he has been calling for more troops for a long time so I guess he felt he had to keep doing it. He is also trying to appeal to the most hawkish state Republicans in our nation, those from South Carolina, where McCain is praying he knocks out the competition in 2008. So a lot of this is strictly for personal political gain, but it's by no means necessarily honest or wise.
