"Iraq and Afghanistan have cost us $500 billion so far and the Pentagon wants another $100B. That's $170B total for this year alone. Where will it end?"

Not at $600 billion, that is for sure. At least part of this money will go to the maintenance that the military has been deferring. But that $26 billion is just a start. Fixing and/or replacing what has been worn out will total over $100 billion alone. If we stay another two years at this activity level, the bill will go well over $1 trillion. So much for the war that pays for itself.

For $100 billion or so, we could loft a moon base and all the needed support infrastructure that would allow us to build solar satellites in geosynchronous orbit. Put up microwave receivers in selected deserts and no more worries about buying oil from the Arabs. Heck, another couple of hundred billion and we could have bought electric vehicles for much of the country. We wouldn't spend that sort of money because it would be crazy to take on that kind of debt for a socialistic program. But we would spend several times that to kill tens of thousands of people, thousands of them our own, and destabilize the Middle East.

This makes sense, how?
