"kris, nike ran up almost $4 today prior to earnings. "

This is their old tactic of running the stock up a day before earnings so it drops from the higher level. Take a look at BBY chart.

"Nike trades mostly on futures orders. They were up a solid 7%. I don't like the stock but I watch Nike for signs of consumer spending"

Orders can always be cancelled. Why, if future is so bright, did insiders sold within the last three months 211.971 shares with zero buys? I know they are diversifying their holdings <G>. Why, if future is so bright, did the RTH go down today, and it has been going sideways for the last month? Retailers tabulate their sales not monthly, not weekly, not daily, they add them up every hour. Don't you think that their shares would be skyrocketing if the sales were great? Why is FDX guiding their earnings down? After all, they are the guys who move the real goods that will be sold? Is the volume/tonnage going down indicating weakening consumer? Take a look at TRAN that represents the real economy rather then XLF that represents the paper shufflers. I have learnt to dismiss the hype and watch the tape for future direction of the markets.

“This latest report shows that the consumer is still relatively strong.”

We should find out in early January how resilient the consumer really is?
