INITIAL JOBLESS CLAIMS Initial claims for unemployment insurance fell substantially more than expected last week, to 304,000 from an unrevised 324,000. Continuing claims for the week ended Dec. 2 were also down, to 2.477 million from a revised 2.510 million. The Labor Dept. reports no special factors involved other than the usual end-of-year problems with volatility and seasonal adjustments. The adjustment factors had expected a drop in actual claims of 42,000 but the number came in down 67,000 actual new claims. www.ows.doleta.gov NOVEMBER IMPORT & EXPORT PRICES A leveling off of oil prices and a spike in natural gas left U.S. import prices up 0.2% in November overall and ex-petroleum import prices were up 0.7%. However, the biggest factor in the non-petroleum increase was a 30% spike in natural gas prices. Taking out all fuels, import prices were up just 0.1%. Export prices rose 0.4% last month. They were boosted by a 4.4% increase in agricultural product prices, the biggest gain since 5.4% in September 2003. Ex-ag, export prices rose 0.1%. www.bls.gov/mxp Dennis Moore NTKN Washington DC
