We spend far to long on silly things like memorizing the multiplication table, or memorizing all the rules of integration; You teach the concept, and the things like that you learn through usage. It's my belief that we could teach kids the fundemental theory of calculus in middle school if we weren't so hung up on the TAAS tests (or whatever it is in your state) Kids pick up abstract theory like sponges, before they've gotten all of this recipe crap locked into their heads. Teach them the theory behind interesting, neat things like group theory, topology, set theory, calculus, complex numbers (none of which are really "too hard" for kids to understand) early on and they'll see that mathematics is something beautiful and intricate as opposed to this dry memorizational rule following
