Report the crime to the police. You'll receive a case number, write it down. Make a note of the date and people you spoke with. Get a copy of the police report if you can. All the financial companies you deal with are going to want the case number and other details. At the same time report any other crimes which might be connected. For example, perhaps your purse or wallet was stolen or your house or car was broken into. Contact all your credit card issuers and explain what has happened, put a hold on all the accounts. Request a new set of cards with a new number. You might have to do the latter in writing. Company/bank/utility (including both phones and mobiles) you deal with. If they have it, you want to get details for their fraud or security departments. Otherwise make a note of their customer service numbers. Set up a fraud alert on your credit report. This means someone can't get a credit card or loan in your name without you finding out. Visit online credit check to set this up. Include the credit reporting agency on the list of companies to contact. While you are there, request a copy of your credit report. Check for new entries you haven't created. Contact each company from the previous three steps. Explain what has happened, review your account with them for any suspect purchases or a change of address. If you find something wrong, you might have to close the account. If you need to open a new account, ask them to put a strong password on it
