Babe Ruth didn't make peanuts. Adjusted for inflation he made over a million dollars per year.

Really? I didn't know that. I always thought that pro athletes 50+ years ago made something closer to the national average, and that changed with the advent of huge television revenues.

I don't know the process to lower athletes wages and pass the savings on to the fan, but there must be a way. Most players would play for much less. And letting the market do its job doesn't really work as well in baseball as it does in shaving cream. Fans are less price conscious (if A's tickets cost $18 and Giants tickets cost $23, Giants fans aren't going to suddenly switch and become A's fans), and most fans have only one local team per sport. It would be relatively easy to regulate athlete's salaries, but how you incent the owners to pass the savings on to the fans I have no idea.

This whole idea sounds like it would have to be imposed by government

Then I would strongly oppose it.

Fine. It would be imposed by invading martians. Does that make it more palatable?
