Automobile terminology: platform.

Platform is the chassis size that cars are classified. Take Ford LTD as an example. It was made as the top of the line Ford car. Then police cars are made to run 180 miles per hour capability. Then discontinued large Thunderbird convertibles were made for the airport rental cars. Mercury and Lincoln both uses LTD chasis. This is the biggest money maker for Ford. Mid and small size cars like taurus and Excort(450,000 cars per year production) were replaced but lost market shares.

Then there is Explorer, SUV made from trucks. And reliable Ford trucks F150-350.

But Ford give up econoline vans for the service industry. And they give up fancy vans for large family with a lot of children. Vans are like bus.

So, some customer targeting and complete line up of cars and trucks will restore Ford viability in the automobile business.
