"First, define "system" in this context."

Ok. There are carbon sources and carbon sinks, with the atmosphere and the oceans providing the medium for them to interact. Producers would be fires, bacteria, animals and just plain old carbon exposed to the atmosphere so it can oxidize. Sinks would be plants, bogs, ocean bottom water, arctic tundra, chlathrates and other places where the carbon can be taken up stored either temporarily or long term. There are some other sinks like coal beds, oil reservoirs and deep earth sources that aren't normally part of the overall system except when an event occurs like a volcano or we dig it up and burn it. There is natural seepage, but the volume is pretty low these days.
