The Justice Department is drafting a proposal to break up Microsoft, and it will be announced before the end of the year! The current draft would have Microsoft spun into 5 different financially independent entities roughly consisting of:

1) Desktop operating systems
2) Desktop software (including internet software)
3) Server operating systems
4) Server software
5) On-line Services

The breakup of Microsoft would coincide with a warning about Intel's marketshare and competitive characteristics, but no immediate formal action would be taken on them.

They're still ironing out all the details, and there is of course a lot of uncertainty about how this plays out internally at the Justice Department and the White House, but supposedly it looks like a go!
