I so think gift cards are the way to go. :) We have a fairly good routine working with the two families who are away from here. They know what each child wants and we send them money. They purchase gifts for the little ones or give cash to the ones who are saving for something, or even add it to other money to get the 'really desired' item of the year.

We send cards and tags in one little manila envelope. We send adults gift cards for places we know they each enjoy.
Works well for us.

Sometimes a grandson or granddaughter will get a gift card if they like a particular clothes or game store. Last year we purchased ebay 'cards' and paid with paypal. We had two grandchildren here who have fun on ebay with parental supervision. :)

The ebay gift turned out to be a lot of fun for them. This year the word was out that they wanted coupons to the local theaters. The family takes them to appropriate shows :) So RAVE theaters was glad to see us arrive to purchase their certificates. I was surprised the first time we purchased from RAVE because they asked for no ID. They just accepted a credit card. They will also get additional cash for the very healthy good food one can purchase only at the theater ;)

It's still shopping. They do get what they want though and the postage is much better. Then of course there is free postage if one purchases a certain dollar amount from online Barnes and Noble etc... that's fun too!

One thing I have ALWAYS enjoyed personally are surprise gifts during the year. We try to do that occasionally also. I always liked them for I felt upon receiving it that it was a gift Given for no reason, no date, no nothing other than a 'thinking of you' gift!! Those are fun to give!!

Also... we give gifts without strings. I have experienced what I felt were 'strings' on gifts given in my life and I don't enjoy those.
