DirecTV satellite is further away from earth(20 miles) to have the continent covered by one satellite. So, cellphones can not bounce off with 5 watts of power on short antenna. Cellphones have to go thru wireless WiMax to the DirecTV ground stations(or WiMax to satellite towers) to be patched to another cellphone user. Which will also provide the broadband connections.

Satellite signal antenna had not been used to their advantage, the reflected signals from trees or other reflective surfaces(buildings) and multi signal beam concentrators opposite the satellite dish.

So, triple play is possible with Dish, and DirecTV.

Original plan in 1998 was to have 1/3 of customers each for cabletv, telcos and satellite operators to saturate the local triple play market.
