"We've lost the myth of our invincibility that has been in place since WWII."

I'd say we began to lose that that in Korea, where we settled for a draw, and lost it completely in Vietnam. As soon as it became clear that we can't just nuke our way to victory, and indeed, can't use our nukes at all and maintain any sort of moral superiority.

Which is as it should be, since it was ALWAYS nothing more than a myth, as it would be for any other country.

What Bush has done is to show the world that America CAN go bad. Up to now, the world believed that our system of checks and balances protected us from really bad leadership. That America, with it's immense power, wasn't in danger of a Hitler-type ( not that Bush IS a Hitler-type ) taking charge and causing a catastrophe. Now, the world knows that it COULD happen here, and we'll NEVER have the level of trust we had before again.
