Platinum Stock Picks: Cheap Technology

Example: Lam Research (nasdaq: LRCX - news - people ). Analysts reporting to Thomson IBES expect the Fremont, Calif.-based semiconductor equipment manufacturer to increase earnings at an annual clip of 20% over the next three to five years. With a next-12-months P/E of just 12, that gives the stock PEG of just 0.62.

We tagged Lam Research as the semiconductor industry’s best-managed company last year. So far in 2006, the stock has advanced 41%, versus a gain of 10% for the S&P 500.

We can’t promise more of the same performance, and, indeed, at least one highly regarded security analyst thinks Lam Research is too dependent on memory chip manufacturers. But we can point out a few positives for Lam beyond a cheap stock price. Those positives include expanding quarterly operating margins (earnings before interest, taxes and depreciation as a percentage of revenue), a clean balance sheet and strong outlook for the semiconductor industry.
