We are all on our own, really, until we make a choice to reach out to other people who are, as the Dalai Lama says, warmhearted. That's not a choice that can be forced from without (imo), and it's foolish to reach out to people who do not want to be reached. It may even be harmful to the very people you feel sorry for.

I think even a warm hearted person chasing you down the street (whether real or metaphorical) can be scary. "Slowdown, I'm just trying to give you some love and compassion..."
