I watched both the SouthLake Carroll game and the Cedar Hills championship victories. Southlake and Austin Westlake seemed more collegiate and smooth in their performances. The QB for Austin W. will be an excellent college QB next year at Arizona State. However, the QB/tailback for Cedar Hills HS, William Cole (referred to as 'young King Cole') just may be the best player in the country and I think he is only a sophomore. He has Reggie Bush moves and I don't know of any HS team that could contain him. It was interesting to watch the sociological phenomenon of the two games. Cedar Hills is a blue collar rainbow community and its team seemed to be predominantly African-American while Southlake seems to be an upper middle class mostly anglo team although many of the stars of the team were African American. They had perhaps the second best back in the country in Tre Newton, son the Dallas Cowboy great tackle, Nate Newton, who also wore orange jump suits for awhile.(http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1674656/bio) Tre made perhaps the greatest run I have seen this year, fending off at least 7 of 11 of the Austin players in a very long run that seemed frequently to be over. It would be fun to see probably the two best HS teams in the country face each other.
As for the academic vs. athletic atmosphere in Texas HS football, I have seen it change over the last 5 years or so. My son attends a magnet school that also has a mediocre football team and the magnet students are highly prized by the faculty and the other students.
