As to whether one would find "Flags of our Fathers" depressing or not, would depend on how you feel about some of Eastwood's other films. I found it thought provoking and sad but not depressing.
If you found
Unforgiven
Mystic River
and Million Dollar Baby depressing, you would probably find 'Flags of our Fathers' depressing.
By and large, I find films by Bruckheimer a lot more depressing than films by Eastwood. So a lot of it depends on what one brings to the screen.
